Gambia should consider using Esperanto

Congratulations to the leadership of Gambia for such a brave step.



In fact, most British colonies are not using English as the official language in the country. Of course, with this, the other African countries should consider to drop the colonial colour by using the language of past masters, English or French.

Gambia's 1.9 million people speak several African languages including Mandingo, Fula and Wolof, the most widely spoken language of Senegal, its only direct neighbour.

Gambia should consider using Esperanto, the language which is recommended by UNESCO since 1954. The reasons are:

1. Learning Esperanto cost less money but in returns the results are huge.

a. learning Esperanto needs only maximum 200 hours but learning English needs 3200 hours. In term of economy, this is a big return.

b. Esperanto brings in higher mental health people, the children as well as old age dementia issue. Read here.

c. choosing a tribal language as the common language, preferable  to use common language rather than national language, will cause some tension among the tribal. Take a look of South Africa, there are more than 10 official languages in use. Can you imagine the cost of translation ? As Spooky said that language policy must be carefully planned, it might cause some internal problems.

d. using Esperanto can save more life on aircrash. Your leadership and officials are mostly travelling by air and Yahoo also reported that Esperanto can save more life.

All colonial masters would not care about the people, now let bygone be bygone if you are sincerely dropping English as the official language of Gambia.  Indonesia is brave to stop teaching English in the schools, this drew many criticism from the English speaking countries. Do the investors stop going to Indonesia ?  In fact, Indonesia made Esperanto as a subject for the young diplomats.

More investors will go to Gambia as they do not have to learn a difficult language, English. Of course, Mandingo, Fula and Walof are still very new to other parts of the world. Esperanto is well know in most countries, even in ASEAN.

Many people are talking nonsensical issue that English is the language of the Internet. If it is so, why the Google translator can translate not only Esperanto, but also other languages like Chinese, Tamil, Telugu etc. Those people who are talking about English is the internet language is still sleeping.

Of course, many comments were talking about Chinese language is most likely to be used as the common language. I beg to differ as Chinese is not the tribal language of Gambia and Chinese language is even harder to learn than English. Hope you are not choosing the way out of the fire into the pan.
