Nigeria should go Esperanto

With 520 languages in the country and many are dying, Nigeria should not think of using other languages to be the common language.

Besides, the economy is another problem. Esperanto needs only 150 hours of learning, this would save you tons of money and the money can be used to develop the country in the area of education and health care.

Other languages, besides mother tongue, should be learnt as a wish but not a compulsory.

If the national language policy is installed in Nigeria, it would see more problems like South Africa. Why UNESCO recommended the use of Esperanto ?

USA has no national language policy but the common language policy. Nigeria should consider that.

The national language question
Linguists have stressed the importance of a national language or national languages as the case may be for any country desirous of development. For Nigeria, English is playing the role of national language. In spite of its ubiquity in the country, only about 20 per cent of the human population is considered by experts to use English. Of this figure, opinion is divided as to the actual percentage of those who use the language well. Language experts have canvassed the view that, since the mass of citizens do not have access to information about government programmes, national development will continue to be a mirage as long as English is not ‘downgraded’ in status. Some proposals were put forward as solution to the national language problem.
